What is Shed180?
Shed180 is an outdoor Art Gallery celebrating urban art in Melbourne. The previously blank wall surfaces of an old brick warehouse showcase a selection of hand painted works by Australian (and International) established and establishing urban artists.
It is rare that the opportunity of such large blank canvas’s, on a site rich in history, a few minutes from Melbourne CBD becomes available. It’s unique location is very attractive to the artists; closely connected and visible to Footscray, Kensington, the train line, cycle network and river traffic.
We believe the large lifeless walls that exist in and around this previously industrial part of our city hold huge opportunity to celebrate Melbourne and Australia’s vibrant and famous Arts culture.
The contrast between the industrial building structures and surrounds and the delicate hand painted designs reflects the relationship between people and their city.
Shed180 is located on an area of land that will undergo transformation over the next 2-5 years. The collection of artists curated on the Shed will have an ongoing relationship with the Site creating hand made in situ art works throughout the evolving precinct which is becoming the West Melbourne Waterfront. To maintain and celebrate the past (and urban art) the bricks from Shed180 with their history, stories and designs will be taken down carefully and reused scattered throughout the new spaces in either a public gallery or performing arts space or within artist studio spaces. Shed180 will remain as it is for around 4-5 years.
